FLASH BOLD , No. 373
Released in 1939
¶ LANSTON MONOTYPE Machine Company cut Flash Bold in 14 to 72 point in 1939. There remains confusion as to whom the design deserves credit. It is either the work of Sol Hess or Edwin W. Shaar. Unfortunately our default resource, Mac McGrew's book, American Metal Typefaces of the Twentieth Century is equally unclear as to the origins. Sol Hess has been mentioned as the originator of the type face.
What is clear, Shaar designed Flash Bold in 1940.
For cultural reasons unexplainable by us, Flash has been very fashionable in European markets consistently outperforming sales in the Americas.
Lanston will soon offer Flash Bold.
