Printensive!
A week-long letterpress immersion course held at the Western New York Book Arts Center.

Learn traditional typesetting skills alongside experimental letterpress techniques in this up-and coming book arts center. An expansive collection of wood and metal type serve as the starting point for endless creative options. Instructors Richard Kegler and Christopher Fritton, along with special guests, will guide you through a variety of approaches to letterpress, with a special focus on design problem-solving using analog techniques. One-color and multi-color work will be explored, as well as monoprints and editions. Students will learn to use bed presses, platen presses, and a number of other printing machines.
Topics include: Handsetting Metal Type, Creating Forms with Wood and Metal Type,
Pressure Printing, Ludlow Type Casting, Editioning, Monoprints, Basic Bookbinding, and more. Days will be broken into morning (9am-12pm) and afternoon (2pm-5pm) sessions, and open studio time will be available some evenings (7pm-10pm). Each session will cover a different, but related, topic. Students can expect to leave with a number of completed works from small to large, and traditional to experimental.
Prices include dorm-style accommodations for 5 days and nights walking distance from WNYBAC, one gourmet group meal, continental breakfast each day, snacks, and all materials. Students will have ample opportunity to interact with area resources, work on their own, and explore urban attractions. The intimate peer group dynamic will facilitate an exchange of ideas and re-energization of the creative process, using hands-on skills as an antidote to digital
dependence.
Printensive is open to advanced students, artists, and professionals with some studio art, printmaking, and design experience.
