Tip of the Month

For March 2003

An almost monthly feature to help you get more out of your fonts and dingbats.

Layering with multi-part fonts

Several of the P22 fonts are designed to allow for optional overlay effects. This can be accomplished in any page layout or graphics program. This cannot be done in a word processing program such as Word.
The P22 fonts that allow for easy two (or three) color overlay effects are:
• Bagaglio (P22 Bagaglio Flat & P22 Bagaglio 3D)
• Folk Art (P22 Folk Art Block, P22 Folk Art Cross & P22 Folk Art Square)
• Fontasaurus
• Frenzy (P22 Frenzy Sans & P22 Frenzy Marks)
• Insectile (P22 Insectile & P22 Insectile Solid)
Salon (P22 Salon Full, P22 Salon Inner & P22 Salon Shadow)
Zephyr (Zephyr Regular & Openface)
The basic idea is to type out your text in one of the fonts (for this example we are using Photoshop5.5)

Then duplicate the text layer and change the font to it's companion font (keep the point size the same)

As a rule of thumb, place the darker colors in the front layer when there is some overlap involved. But as with all creative endeavors...please experiment with variations to see what fits your needs best.

Here is a sample showing the three variations of the Salon font set in various combinations.

(green-P22 Salon Full, red-P22 Salon Inner, black-Salon Shadow)

Color combinations can be subtle or striking for various effects
