Brief Biography
  • 1873 - born- July 31 Svetec u Biliny, Bohemia
  • 1892 - Studied at the School of Applied Art in Prague (in Friedrich Ohmann's Decorative Architecture workshop)
  • 1893 - Illustrated Tyrolean elegies by Karel Havlicek Borovsky
  • 1897 - Finished his studies in Prague at the "artistic-industrial school". Moved to Paris
  • 1898 - Worked with Alphonse Mucha in Paris
  • 1902 - Illustrated "Broucci" for Paris paper "L'Assiette au beurre"
  • 1903-04 - Returned to Prague, worked at a Czech type foundry
  • 1905 - Established his own Studio in Prague-Vinhrady
  • 1907 - Solo Exhibitions in Prague and Vienna
  • 1909 - Created the book "Colored Etching and Colored Engravings"- considered to be a milestone in the foundation of Modern Czech book production
  • 1910 - Moved to the USA
  • 1912-16 - Taught at the Art Students' League in NY
  • 1914-16 - Taught in New York at The Teachers College at Columbia University
  • 1915 - Formulated theories for Art Fundamental and worked on abstract collages
  • 1916-26 Directed the School of Printing and Graphic Arts, Wentworth Institute, Boston
  • 1920-23 Began Correspondence with Dard Hunter
  • 1925 - Feb 26. casting completed for Preissig Roman type at the Czech State Printing Office foundry.
  • 1930 - Returned to Czechoslovakia
  • 1931 - Solo Exhibition Prague
  • 1933 - Solo Exhibition Prague
  • 1934 - Solo Exhibition Hradec Kralove
  • 1935 - began work on a series of abstract paintings
  • 1938 - Publishes anti-German propoganda --helps print magazine Into Action (V boj)
  • 1940 - Arrested for his involvement in the resistance movement
  • 1944 - died- June 11 Dachau
