About The Sherwood Type Collection
Sherwood is a collection of 28 historically based fonts designed by Ted Staunton. About Ted Staunton
Ted Staunton was born in 1942 in Lincoln, England.
After serving a five-year apprenticeship as a hand compositor (1958 - 1963) with the Lincolnshire Publishing Co., he spent three years (1963 - 1966) at Leicester College of Art & Design, graduating with a diploma in Typographic Design. His interest in lettering and typeface design revealed itself in the subject of his diploma thesis: The Development and Usage of the Gothic Letterform. After spending some time in London working for Penguin, Hamlyn and other book publishing houses, he emigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1970, working for Mitchell Press and Hemlock Printers before opening his own design business and letterpress printing shop, Sherwood Graphics, in 1984. In 1991 he published a private press book, The Lincolnshire Poacher, illustrated with his own wood-engravings.
He is now semi-retired, and lives in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver, with his wife and family. He began creating fonts early in his career, some of which were used privately on transfer lettering sheets and cast in metal for hand typesetting at his private press, Sherwood Letterpress.
