Richard Kegler-Books

From 1988 to 1994, "Richard Kegler Handmade Books" was both the primary creative outlet and the main source of income for Richard Kegler graduate student. During this time of wading through the bureaucratic maze of the New York State University system and studying computer arts, a personal interest in the book arts was explored. Along with sculptural book works, a series of blank journals were made which were sold throughout the United States in museum and gallery gift shops. Over 3000 books were individually hand made. No two were ever the same.

A couple of awards and a variety of fine crafts exhibits were the highlight of this era, but time was running out for this bookbinder. At the age of 29, Mr. Kegler officially retired from the bookbinding trade to concentrate full time on type design with P22 type foundry. This page shows some of the book projects completed. Upcoming limited editions will be announced on this site.

Recent Edition----AUTUMN--inspired by a poem by William Carlos Williams
New Book Edition----Dear Mr. Hunter--Deluxe edition of recent P22 publication
This book was one of a series of books design in reaction to the comments that the blank books I designed were "too nice to write in". Using traditional materials, the binding was executed with metal bolts which would render the book impossible to write in. This deliberate attempt to make the book an object to behold..and not hold information, transforms the entire concept of what a book is intended to be...a container of information.
