I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I
"A great font man can never be typecast."
¶ GERALD GIAMPA is of Italian descent. When he was born in 1950 his parents lived in a Jones Tent & Awning work-camp tent in Duncan, British Columbia. His career as a typographer and a fine book printer began at age thirteen when he purchased a hand-fed platen press from George Kuthan, a famous Czechoslovakian Canadian lino-cut artist. At that time Giampa mentored under Wil Hudson, printer and publisher. Wil had come from San Francisco to set up shop in Vancouver.
¶ GERALD GIAMPA left home at age fourteen and founded Cobblestone Press, book publishers. For a brief period afterwards he ran away to sea without a passport and was set ashore in San Francisco where he met Al Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and spent some time with Janis Joplin. Giampa returned to Vancouver, set up shop, and lived from his skills in the 'black arts' ever since.
He loved San Francisco, meeting many poets, printers and publishers in his short stay.
¶ LANSTON TYPE COMPANY is pleased to present the most colourful living typographer in the industry. To some his life is an enigma.
¶ SELF-PORTRAIT by Giampa in his former garden on Prince Edward Island. These days he is writing about typography and planning on a speaking tour about the American Lanston Monotype Machine Company.
¶ TODAY GERALD GIAMPA resides on the Turku Archipelago in Finland. Giampa is currently making ready his new wood vessel for launching and looks forward to meandering around the 100 tall ships that will anchor in his home port, Näsby, near Träsk, Houtskär. This island lays between the Finnish mainland and Åland towards Sweden. Giampa is learning Swedish. He is asked to lecture on his life in typography. Now Giampa is writing a book on printers fleurons for a New York publisher. Also he pursues a personal passion for the sea. He owns two open wooden "clinker built" vessels in Finland. One is a mid sized row boat, the other is a "Snipa" with a mid engine diesel. He also has an antique "make & break" petrol engine waiting for a hull.
Gerald Giampa is pursuing his interests in steam and sail powered vessels.
