(2) THE MOULD is underneath the bridge, above the nozzle, over the melting pot.
(3) THE CENTERING PIN is held by, and runs down through the bridge. The pin centres the selected matrice firmly on the mould for casting.
¶ AIR PINS ON THE CASTER base positions and locks the rods on the Lanston Monotype Bridge. This is what stops the matrix case in its journey over the mould locating the individual typographical character, or space, for casting.
After each character is cast the centring pin moves up releasing the die case for its next changed position. Then the pin drops into the next selected matrice cone hole centring the mat firmly against the mould for casting.
The cone hole is opposite the face of the matrice.
The molten type metal is pumped upward into the mould forming the body, and into the selected matrice forming a complete type, or space. These characters march like a regiment of lead soldiers out of the type channel and stand in attention in the galley.
The bridge and the mould are the heart of the Monotype machine. This is the business sector.
