P22 Playing Card Contest

Our P22 type specimen playing card decks were a smash success. A bit too successful...we are all out!

Rather than just re-print them, we thought it might be nice to do an entirely new deck...and have our friends help out.

So here's the deal.
-Download our guideline template and choose a card. The design can be non-specific (applicable to any card) OR specific to any of the standard 52 cards in a poker deck: A,K,Q,J,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 of Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades. If a specific card is chosen, be sure to consider proper charcteristics (ie One Eye Jack, Suicide King, etc) for more card lore, see: http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/playing-cards/

-Pick a P22 font or font set that you have a certain fondness for.
IHOF, P22, Sherwood and Lanston fonts are all eligible.

-Design a card using that font. Design should be sensitive to the font chosen and highlight its best features. If the design is specific to a card please make it clear which card you are submitting or indicate "for any card" (P22 will add the suit and number graphics, design should only be for the center of card as shown in template)

-A panel of well-respected typophiles will choose one card for each of the 52 cards and joker. For inspiration, see the original P22 deck.

-For each card chosen, the winner will receive 2 full decks of the finished cards, credit for design in the deck itself and online, plus kudos all around.

-Enter as many as you like. If we pick 5 of your designs, you get 10 decks.

-All entries must be submitted by May 15th, 2005. There is no fee to enter.

Submission Guidelines:

-Entrants must be using a properly licensed font. Those not registered with P22 will be asked to supply proof of purchase of fonts.

-Students are fully eligible (and this may be used as a class design project) and will be judged alongside professional and casual design entries. Student entries must have their school properly licensed for fonts used.

-If a specific card has more than one possible winning contender, we may ask for slight modifications in order to move the design to another card.

-Decision of the judges is final. All entries are granted permission by P22 for reproduction whether selected or not. Artwork remains the copyright of the designer with permission granted to P22 to reproduce as needed (cards and subsequent press reprints of images).
